This is my and also my first time making something from pattern.
I used the Simplicity 4116 pattern. Even though the measurements were in inches, the dress ended up being 4 inches larger than I had expected. Instead of taking the entire thing apart to resize it, I just took the 4 inches out from the middle of the back.  It looked and fit perfectly after that.

I am looking for a coat pattern that will help me make this. The original price is way too expensive and something that could be easily made. Any suggestions?

ETA: What fabric do you recommend me using (which I know is subjective but what are your thoughts)?

Hey, so I haven't posted here in FORRREVVVERRR. My journal used to be under the name of __lyla but with that sexy rename token LJ handed out to all of us with underscore starts, I got a free change.

I hit a ridiculous dead end with my journalling over the last year, and just as I hit a run of inspiration, I cut open my hand and had to get stitches so I can't hold a pen/paint brush/scissors any more.

Anyone been in the same boat, or anyone who just struggled finding inspiration but fought on regardless: how did you cope? Show me your pages :]

Since we have been staying at home lately (we did sneak out to see the new Harry Potter yesterday woo!) I’ve been doing a lot of cleaning, moving things around, tidying, etc. I have this love for white plates, especially ones with unusual edging. I seem to have acquired quite the collection without even realizing it. All purchases second-hand of course.

There has also been a lot of reading going on. Howl’s Moving Castle which I bought for the drive to SC. My 13 yr old finished it during day one of the drive, and then once we got home I read it in about two nights. It is really good and how now prompted a hunt for more of her books. Material Obsession has me very inspired to try to branch out a bit more with quilts, we shall see. This Is For You is of course just beautiful, Tom bought it for me a few weeks ago…and Wonderland another gift from Tom. It follows the story of MaryAnn and makes a fun edition to our Alice books.

It has been raining all day long, but stopped a few hours ago so I went out and weeded all the flower beds, and garden. The garden barely needed any weeding and I feel like I owe that to Katie’s parent’s garden. They have a huge garden which they mulch with grass clippings, and I just never thought about doing that. I did it a few weeks ago and the garden hasn’t needed much weeding since. Our rainbow chard on the other hand is gone. Something came and ate every last bit of it. We had about 9 bunches growing, and this is what they all look like now.

We have harvested green beans and one cucumber so far. We were late in planting our seeds, so I am not expecting too much greatness, but it is still fun no matter what we get.

B’s foot is healing nicely. We had a check up at the doctors today, but it will be ten more days before the stitches come out. He can however now begin to walk using his heel, and that is such a relief.

"My project deals with the representation of Muslim women and their social condition. I was been studying and dealing with this theme for years. As you can imagine, here in Turin, my posters are seen as an ambiguous subject. Some people mislead and rip them, while others love them. I would like to make people know that there is nothing strange with this particular subject: Muslim women are equal if compared to Western women. My Muslim women are represented in daily life situations: they are mothers, grandmothers and daughters, smoking, taking pictures and smiling. My message is: pointing out that Muslim women have the same needs and necessities of the majority of Western women. Certainly, the only exception is the veil. The veil changes in different countries, and here comes the sociological aspect of my work: I am very careful in rendering the different types of veil, the Maghrebi veil, the Afghani burga and the Iranian chador.

In my opinion, nowadays it’s crucial to conceive street art as a tool to spread social messages. Moreover, I made a deep research and I discovered that I am the only artist, in the street art movement, that deals entirely with this topic. Isn’t it strange? In general, the woman is the best source of inspiration for artists, why Muslim women wouldn’t be the same? I would like to create a network of artists of all nations, about this subject, eventually to compare the different viewpoints.

My posters are drawn and coloured freehand, each of them is unique. The subjects are not invented but real, I use images taken from newspapers, magazines and websites. Often they are portraits of important personalities of Muslim society (novelists, poets, entrepreneurs, feminists etc…), in order to make Western societies know who they are and what they do."... there's this really creepy guy with a harelip who looks a bit like aging justin hall. he's come into my coffee shop a few times, and i always see him with fedex envelopes around the neighbourhood (there's a fedex kinkos right near by). i also see him on the 98 b-line constantly. anyway, one day he came into my work and asked me if i wanted to go to hawaii with him that night and other stupid middle aged man flirtations, and then another time i saw him on the bus and he hostilly insulted me for using barely scented handcream and told me it smelled terrible (it was herbacin kamile, that german cream that barely smells like anything). i just get the impression he is a terrible misogynist and i feel like he's going to ed-gein me or give ME a harelip.

there is also a moderately retarded regular customer (who more than once has literally peed all over the café bathroom) who has followed me most of the way home, and will usually tell me i am pretty and ask me what my name is and where i live. andrew jokes that he has me singled out for an "of mice and men" type strangulation.

-Opening Ceremony and their collaborations with Chloe Sevigny and Pendleton
-Rex Harrison
-Summer Playlists that feature old school No Doubt and Less Than Jake

&Muchmuchmore! I could go on forever because a lot of things are good right now.

EDIT:
The other day on the way back from Fire Island on the Ocean Parkway there were news trucks from like NBC and News12 lined up along the dunes. My mind immediately jumped to the conclusion that there was a beached whale... Well, I was sort of close. Also, Long Island has sharks? Crazyness, but at least they're friendly toothless sharks.

Margot Tenenbaum. 10" x 13" colored pencil, ink, and acrylic paint on paper. Buy the original on Etsy.

This is the second in a series of drawings I'm doing based on characters I love from different films, television shows, or anything really. The Royal Tenenbaums, directed by Wes Anderson, has always been on of my favorite movies. When I thought about which character i'd draw from the movie it was no question that it would be Margot. I drew her here smoking a cigarette, her wooden finger, and standing in Richie's living room gallery. The quote comes from the movie, the narrator says it about Margot in the beginning.

Knowing I am an extreme fan of Oolong, a friend purchased some for me....and sadly I'm not really a fan of this particular flavor. I believe it is Wu-Yi Oolong (my friend forgot the name of course) and is described as having a "rich body with an earthy, smoky flavor." I have about 2.5oz of it and willing to ship anywhere within the continental US.

Does anyone have any good links to creating fabric flowers?
I'm making these (because most bridesmaids dresses I saw were too evil -and expensive- to inflict on my 2 best friends).

The waist calls for a pin of some kind but I was thinking of putting some flowers on there. I've looked at kanzashi flowers but I think they are probably too 'structured' for the style of the dresses.

Anyone got an ideas?
